DOES GOD WANT US TO CHANGE THE WORLD?  And if so, how? If you’re in a hurry, let me cut to the chase:  a.) yes – and b.) by doing what the Clapham Circle did: proving their faith through works, mostly among the poor and powerless, and working among the rich and powerful. Pat Robertson Said WHAT!!!??

I’m sure you’ve heard about it:  Pat Robertson said that Haiti’s founders made a pact with Satan in 1791 and the nation’s ongoing woes are a direct result of that diabolical beginning.  Whoops! Um, what’s the Aramaic word for “retraction”?

Predictably, the condemnations have been thundering.  But let’s be honest.  It’s incredibly tempting to look for immediate answers to tragedies.   Why them and not me?  Did someone cause it?

Of course there is never a simple answer.  If God were in the business of punishing sin in obvious ways, NBC President Jeff Zucker would have been struck by lightning weeks ago — perhaps more than once.  But it rarely works out like that.   Bad people seem to thrive.  In the Psalms, King David even asks:  “Why do the wicked prosper?”  And King David didn’t even know about Jeff Zucker.   [To continue, click here.]

JESUS AND TIGER AND BRIT — OH MY!

Last weekend FoxNews analyst Brit Hume said something so beyond-the-pale that the outrage has been deafening.

Did he say Janet Napolitano was the love child of Susan Sontag and Elmer Fudd?   Did he label the POTUS a “long-legged Mack Daddy”?   Did he say that Adam Lambert was making him reconsider his position on Sharia Law?   Those things would have been offensive — but he didn’t say any of them!

Then what did he say?  Well, what he said was pretty bad, so if you are reading this aloud with kids around, you might want to tell them to go play with their Wii for a few minutes…  Okay, are they out of the room? Great.

JESUS IN CHICAGO

I’m writing this from a small room in an old convent adjoining what used to be an inner-city Chicago Catholic high school. Five years ago the high school closed, and my friend Bob Muzikowski saw an opportunity. Bob and his wife, Tina, have given their lives to working with inner-city kids and lives a block away from the school. He decided to raise enough money to buy the property and turn it into a

non- denominational Christian high school.  He named it Chicago Hope Academy, and today there are nearly 200 students. Three are Bob and Tina’s kids. Here is some video. One is from “Oprah’s Big Give”, which was on ABC last year.

I’ve visited CHA before and it’s staggeringly inspiring. For one thing there are no locks on the lockers. Bob says that they teach the kids that stealing is wrong, so there’s no need. They actually live this stuff. Almost all the students are on partial or full scholarships, and many come from very very rough homes, so this place is a lifeline for them, in some cases quite literally. This place is the real thing. I desperately hope that some of you who read these words decide that for Easter you’d like to make a contribution to this place. Whatever money you give away you KNOW you can’t lose in the market… And if you give to CHA you can know that God has used you. This is real.  These kids need your help.  

The reason I’m here this weekend is to emcee an all-student production of “The Gathering”, a play about the Last Supper that is serious and funny at the same time. These students are hugely impressive in their roles! Part of the joy of being here for a few days is getting to know some of them. Here’s a photo of the cast!
