The morning after the Superbowl, I had the honor of spending an hour talking with former President George W. Bush. He and the First Lady have read Bonhoeffer and now I’m reading his book.

A fascinating article from USA Today, by my friend Barbara Bradley Hagerty.
Armed with new technology, scientists are peering into the brain to better understand human spirituality. What if, they say, God isn’t some figment of our imagination? Instead, perhaps brain chemistry simply reflects an encounter with the divine.

Socrates in the City

Just go to www.socratesinthecity.com and register for our emails and you’re in! Because according to GOD IS BACK: How the Global Rise of Faith Will Change the World, an acclaimed new book by two Economist magazine journalists, “Socrates in the City holds discussions on ‘the examined life’ for Manhattan’s smart set.” SITC is mentioned alongside the Trinity Forum and the C.S. Lewis Institute as examples of faith-friendly efforts among the high-brow circuit. Of course.
For a fab article on the subject of whether God really is back — or ever left — in the current issue of World magazine, click here. It’s by my friend Marvin Olasky, Provost at Manhattan’s King’s College. Must reading.
If you are already receiving Socrates emails, you are — of course — already part of “Manhattan’s smart set”. And congrats to you! But if you aren’t receiving them — good grief, by all means click here and sign up before anyone knows you haven’t already done so! And register for our Juen 20th, with former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, which is selling extremely briskly, so hurry!

Right here in Manhattan, my wife, Susanne, runs the MPSC (Midtown Pregnancy Support Center) a non-political, non-profit Christian organization that offers help of all kinds to women (and families) that find themselves in “crisis pregnancies.” The stories one hears from such women can be incredibly moving; but what’s most striking to me is that one never seems to hear these stories — of real women, making real decisions in difficult circumstances — anywhere in the popular culture, neither on tv nor in the so-called main-stream media. Here’s one such story from the online site for First Things.

Can you imagine a four-time-Tony-nominated actress like Tovah Feldshuh (Golda’s Balcony) starring in a well-reviewed Broadway production that is essentially pro-God and pro-life?? Don’t even try. Just go and see Irena’s Vow at the Walter Kerr Theatre. I saw it two nights ago and was stunned that this true story about a Catholic Polish woman who hides twelve Jews from the Nazis had been had been allowed to retain its pro-God and pro-life point of view. My Bonhoeffer book — due out in October! — obviously deals with the subject of Jews in Nazi Germany, so seeing it dealt with as artfully and truthfully as it was in this play was hugely encouraging, not to say very inspiring. At the end of the play, Irena’s daughter came out and answered audience questions. Amazing. Treat yourself to a night at the theater and go see Irena’s Vow.

Susan Isaacs has always been brilliantly funny — at least ever since I’ve known her — but for the first time ever she’s put her brilliance and comedic genius between the covers of a book, and — drumroll here — it’s an absolute triumph. The phrase “You’ll laugh; you’ll cry.” has never been more apt. This is the book many of us have been waiting for. Buy it and give it to friends and book her to speak about it — did I mention she’s hilarious?? — and thank me when you can. Here’s the website and here are some reviews:
“God in couples counseling? Sounds sacrilegious, but in the adept hands of comedian, writer and actress Isaacs, it’s a success. Isaacs moves easily between recounting her life story and her counseling sessions … Isaacs readily admits to being snarky, but she’s honest about her quest and its conclusion: “I saw now all too clearly why I had married God: for the power and the glory. For the money.” Isaacs goes on a Job-like search for explanations from God, but instead finds the problem to be her. She’s funny, biting, earthy and brilliant.” — Publisher’s Weekly
Face it, folks, the church is made up of messed-up people all trying to deal with life. I appreciate writers like Susan who creatively face their issues with honesty and humor. Angry Conversations is a really fun read!” — Tony Hale, actor, “Stranger Than Fiction,” “Arrested Development”
“If King David were a woman, and were funny, he’d be Susan Isaacs. And the thing about this book is: it surprises you. There are lines in it you won’t see coming. You’ll be handing this book to somebody else about a month from now, thinking ‘maybe this will help them understand me.’ You’ll do that because it helped you understand yourself first.” — Donald Miller, author of Blue Like Jazz.
“A brilliantly funny, fearlessly honest, and deeply moving account of one woman’s search for God and man, not necessarily in that order. Fun fact: There’s more truth in this book than there are lies in James Frey’s A Million Little Pieces” — Eric Metaxas
