I discovered today that I have two things in common with Harvard Astronomer Dr. Owen Gingerich, speaking at Socrates in the City tonight.  We both appear as talking heads in the tremendous BBC documentary “The Narnia Code” — and we have both publically weighed in on the planetary status of Pluto.  Dr. Gingerich was one of the scientists on the International Astronomical Union’s “Planet Definition Committee” who in 2006 were charged with officially determining whether Pluto was a planet.  They said it was.  But in 2001, when Pluto’s planetary status was first challenged, I weighed in with a sarcastic Op-Ed for the New York Times.  You may see it by clicking here.
